Finding Your Spirit This Season...

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!” ― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

You gotta love Dr. Seuss.  There is just so much wisdom to be had in the words he wrote.  This particular quote is one of my favorites.  I know, it references “Christmas” and in many circles I guess that is a bit of a no, no.  For me, it isn’t about “Christmas”, per say, but rather the Season.   There is something absolutely magical about it that has nothing to do with purchases or brightly gift-wrapped presents.  People are a little more patient, a bit kinder, more thoughtful.  Everyone just seems to dig a little bit deeper and for the final month of the year, the world feels like a slightly better place.

December also represents endless opportunity for one to find their spirit.  There is no better time to reflect on the year past then in the final 31 days of the year.  What have you accomplished?  What were your goals?  Did you accomplish them?  Were you the person you wanted to be?  Did you do things that made you and others proud?  What opportunities are still left to be recognized?  By reflecting now, you give yourself the chance to build on what you have already done and maybe do “a little bit more”.  The “little bit more” is as unique as you are.  For some maybe it is as simple as holding a few extra doors open or saying “thank you”, for others it could be a gesture intended to inspire or an act to lend a helping hand.  Whatever it is, the effort made brings you one step closer to finding your spirit this season and taping into its’ magic.
I definitely have a few things on my list. :)  What's on yours?
'til next time...

Influenced and Inspired

People like to know people.  They like to understand them.  They like the details.  Sometimes, I think it is just innocent curiosity; other times I think it goes deeper than that.  People like to know they aren’t alone.  They like to feel like they aren’t the only ones feeling a certain way or going through a certain situation.  There is comfort in sameness and there is inspiration in others experiences.

In life, like in business, I believe in transparency.  Information is powerful and experience is an essential element of growth and development.  I guess that is part of the reason why I’ve decided to partake in this blog journey.  If even one person reads a post and they are able to relate and it somehow helps, entertains or inspires them, it is truly worth the time and effort.

Maybe, in a way, this is my way of paying it forward.

I’ve been very lucky in my life.  I have had the privilege of being influenced and inspired by some pretty remarkable people.  They have each earned and deserve my respect and my undying gratitude.  At the top of my list, it would be no surprise to anyone who knows me, is my Dad.  It’s funny, even typing that last sentence has a remarkable impact on me.  I am filled with emotion.

Quite simply, my Dad is my hero.  He always has been.  For as long as I can remember, I have idolized him.  As a young child, wanting to be with my Dad meant evolving into a certified tom boy.  If my Dad liked it, so did I; duck hunting, snowmobiling, roof shingling, splitting wood.    Growing up, there was no one who I wanted to make prouder.  It was my Dad who inspired me to be determined and to never settle, because he never did.  I developed a very strong work ethic because as I child I really don’t remember my Dad ever being idle.  He was up early and constantly moving; building something, fixing something or helping out a neighbor.  While my Dad watched me grow up, in many ways I watched him grow up, as well.  With age, my dad has become more level, more thoughtful, more patient and deeply compassionate.  His evolution has taught me that there is always room for improvement and we can never stop trying to be better.

Approximately 9 years ago, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer.  It was shocking and it turned all of our worlds upside down.  The man that I had always thought of as invincible was sick.  And, he dug in, fought hard and beat it.   Once again, my Dad demonstrated his strength and tenacity.

After my Dad’s battle with cancer, family became even more important to me.  Spending time together wasn’t just a priority, it was a necessity.  Our annual family vacations became about spending time with my parents and there was no place I would have rather been.  Thank goodness my husband is loving and supportive.  It’s not every man that wants to spend all his vacation time with his in-laws.

Seven months ago, the nightmare began again.  Cancer reared its’ ugly head; this time in a form that is without a cure.

My Dad’s illness has been nothing less than devastating.   Having to face the cruel hard facts that the man whom I cherish and idolize and consider my rock and my constant is being victimized for a second time is terrifying.    I know life isn’t forever.  I can say it out loud and know the truth in the words, but to have to face the mortality of the greatest influence and inspiration in my life is painful, beyond anything words can express and it is forcing me to get stronger.  No matter how long the relay, the baton eventually must be passed.  It is my turn to be strong.  I have to do everything I can to be for others what my dad has been for me.  I have to do everything I can to be strong for my Dad, my Mom and our family.  While not curable, my Dad’s cancer can be manageable and we will help him manage it for as long as we possibly can.

My Dad is my hero.   He is my greatest influence and my biggest source of inspiration.  I am so lucky. I am so grateful.

Who is your greatest influence?  Who is your greatest source of inspiration?  Do they know?  There is no better time than the present to ensure they do.

Determination, Goal-Setting and Being O.K. with "Runner"

In my introductory post, I introduced myself as a number of things; runner being one of them.  Here’s what you don’t know.  It has taken me a heck of a long time to be able to call myself that.  The fact is, I still choke on it a little bit when I say it and have to constantly resist putting quotations around it when I write it.   I definitely was not born to run.  I was not built to run.  And, even after some significant weight loss, I would still be what many consider a Clydesdale runner.  The reality is I don’t weigh 115 pounds and I have hips. But, I run and I have been running for almost 10 years.

I have my good friend, Kelly Wiley, to thank for getting me started.  She is an incredible runner.  Ten years ago I was struggling with my weight and had decided that if I couldn’t be thin, I better be fit.  Kelly was kind enough to take me under her wing.  Running became an enjoyable social excursion.  Kelly and I would meet up early in the morning, chat about life and cover some miles.

Now, while I haven’t always been a runner, I have always been determined and a firm believer in the power of goals.  I wasn’t a good runner.  I wasn’t a natural runner.  I was a determined runner.  To get better, I knew I needed a goal.  A half marathon was that big hairy audacious goal that seems so unattainable that it was insanely attractive.   Long story short….  I found a training plan.  I followed it.  I completed my first half marathon, proudly, with a smile on my face and my family cheering me on.  While there have been bumps and curves along the way, I have always found my way back to running.  I have also come to realize that there is something I love even more than running and that is helping others tap into their running potential.  I find incredible joy in helping people realize that nothing is impossible.

A few years ago I gave my husband the “gift of wellness” for his birthday.  This included my commitment to train him and get him across the finish line of his very first half marathon.  It was the best gift and maybe the most selfish gift I have ever given.  It resulted in hours and hours of running and great conversation with my best friend.  When one of us didn’t want to go, the other forced us out the door.  It was an incredible experience and has resulted in the completion of 4 half marathons over the last year.  My husband is in remarkable shape, at his goal weight and while hard to admit, now faster than I am.

Now, on to the next challenge….

About 4 weeks ago, the Beyond Monday Running Club was born.  The concept is simple.  Inspire some folks to come together at the end of a long day, lace up and get some fresh air while putting one foot in front of the other.  There is no need to be fast.  There is no need to be able to run and run and run.  The only thing membership requires is a renewed commitment to health, determination and the willingness to believe that anything is possible.  Last week, the Group proved that there is definite power behind their commitment.  Not only were they out running for the third week in a row, but they decided a big hairy audacious running goal was required to keep them running, even on nights like last night when the snow and slush resulted in instant soakers for all.  The BHAG…..The Beyond Monday Running Club will be training for the Ottawa Race Weekend Half Marathon, Sunday May 24th 2015!!!

For anyone thinking, “you folks is crazy”, you need to know that the goal is simply to cross the finish line as a team in celebration of completing a 16 week training program. We are going to have fun.  We are going to get a little healthier and we are going to be darn proud of accomplishing something we didn’t think was possible.  Now, just because you don’t live in Ottawa, doesn’t mean you can’t join us!  The more the merrier.   I have included the race website below.  Check it out.  Our official training begins February 1st and we will gladly share the program with anyone who wants to log some miles with us.  Sound crazy? Crazy isn’t always a bad thing. J  Give it some thought.  We would love to have you.

Until next time, take care..

The Why....

Let's start at the very beginning...with an introduction. :)
Many of the people who may give this blog a browse will already know me, others may not...so here it goes.

My name is Tracy and I am a 43 year old wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, runner and leader/president of a Rogers/Fido Dealership with 20 stores, across Ontario.  I am passionate about many things and at the top of the list is PEOPLE.  I love my family with every ounce of fiber in my being.  They are my heart and soul.  I have a small collection of people I consider close friends and for them, I would do anything.  The largest group in my life are the individuals who make up our Rogers and Fido Team.  We are just shy of 100 members.  When the idea of this blog first crossed my mind, it was really all about them.

We pride ourselves on being a PEOPLE FIRST organization and I am constantly looking for new and different ways to demonstrate this commitment.

The original idea for the blog was to have a place to highlight the world BEYOND the business.  At the end of the day, even the most busy and stressful ones, we are all people who strive to have a rewarding and fulfilling life, both professionally and personally.  At a time when our industry is crazy, chaotic and often times demanding and stressful, it is incredibly important for our team to know we get it.  While we want and need them to be successful on the sales floor, we also want them to be happy and enriched in their personal life. We continually talk about leading by example and we do it very well on the sales floor.  We may not do it as well, beyond the sales floor.  It isn't that we don't believe in balance and family and health and wellness.  In fact, it is for these very reasons we work as hard as we do.

So...this blog will act as a window that looks beyond the sale. Some of the posts could simply be about what's going on in my life and others may be about some great team activities happening beyond the sales floor.  Heck...it may even be about you!   For instance, recently, the Beyond Monday Running Group was born!!  Wicked cool.  Through this blog, you are sure to hear more about this endeavor and you may even be challenged  to join in on the BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS running challenge.

So there you have it.  The blog has purpose and has been created with the best of intentions.  The path we take is sure to be bumpy and often times uncertain, but that is kinda part of the fun.

I hope you enjoy and feel welcome to provide feedback.

Thanks.

Tracy
